January 13, 2008 ..... Issue #008 - Antifreeze Poisoning In Dogs

Antifreeze Symptoms -- Beware

Every year, more than 10,000 dogs and cats are victims of being accidentally poisoning by automobile antifreeze.

What is that causes anitfreeze poisoning? There is ethylene glycol in antifreeze. It takes only a small sip to poison your pet.

One or two teaspoons will poison a cat and three tablespoons full is enough to kill a dog.

Ethylene glycol has a taste and smell that is attractive to dogs.

Antifreeze poisoning mainly occurs in the fall and in the spring, when vehicle owners replace the old antifreeze in radiators. However it can occur anytime, anyplace, whenever vehicle hoses break or radiators boil over, releasing the green-colored sweet smelling and tasty liquid.

Treating antifreeze poisoning

Getting your dog to a veterinarian fast is the key to successfully treating antifreeze poisoning. Another source of help is the National Animal Poison Control Center, 800-548-2423.

Treatment is to get the dog or cat to vomit using peroxide solution, drinking alcohol or using activated charcoal.

Prevent antifreeze poisoning

  • Do not allow dogs around it.

  • Old waste antifreeze should be properly disposed of.

  • Containers of new, unused antifreeze should be properly sealed and stored.

A safe alternative to ethylene glycol antifreeze poisoning is availiable. It is called propylene glycol; product name Sierra and while it cost a small amount more, it is well worth it for your piece of mind.

Crucial to recovery; recognize the signs and your dog will make a complete turnaround within 9-12 hours. After 12-24 hours, your dog may be at the point of no return.

Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning

Early symptoms of the first stage:

  • Alcohol intoxication

  • Vomit

  • Drink and urinate excessively

  • Depressed and wobbly

In between the stages, the dog may appear normal.

Later symptoms of the second (deadly) stage:

  • Depressed, weak and dehydrated

  • Diarrhea

  • Mouth ulcers

  • Rapid breathing

  • Seizures

  • Kidneys are painful and swollen

This is one of the top ten poisons in dogs and cats in the US.
