February 13, 2008 ..... Issue #009 - Winter Weather Is Stress For Dogs

Winter Weather And Dogs --- Protect Your Fur Babies

Global warming has created strange weather all over the country this year. Where I am in the Midwest, it is below zero with no relief in sight. If you have caught a cold or the flu, you can definitely pass this virus on to your dog.

  • Stay Healthy - The immune system is the ONLY system that heals the body. Needs extra health benefits.

Treat it correctly by boosting your dog's immune system.

  • Stay Away From Antifreeze - Highly toxic. Also brake fluids. Last newsletter was on this. Read now.

  • Arthritis - Cold damp weather aggravates it. Worst for overweight dogs. If your dog is having trouble climbing stairs or starts to snap or cry when picked up, try this.

If you use a space heater, put scat mats around to keep your dog from tipping them over.

  • Outdoor Pet - Shield them from wind, cold and moisture. Make sure they have a waterproof shelter facing away from the winds. It should be off the ground and insulated with straw or wood shavings. No heaters - fire hazard.

Need extra food and fresh water. Don't use metal bowls. Best to have a heated plastic or ceramic bowl so the water will not freeze and your dog's tongue won't stick to the metal.

  • Stay Fit - Exercise is important. However if temperature drop below freezing, don't leave your dog outside long and try to invest in a good pair of boots for them.

Might also be wise to invest in a coat for them to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Signs of hypothermia are shivering. Dont' let you dog run loose in the dead of winter, especially during a snowstorm because dogs can lose their scent and easily get lost.

The salt used for ice in the winter is toxic, so wash off your dog's feet if you expose them to it. There are safer ice melters such as Safe Paw.

Also if your dog get ice or snowballs between his pads, place your pet's feet in warm not hot water to melt it. Dry. Leaving the snowballs in between his feet can obstruct blood flow to his toes.

  • Travel With Your Dog - Never leave your dog alone in a car or truck in cold weather. Vehicles hold in the cold and it could cause your pet to freeze to death.

Have a safe and beautiful winter with your dog by being cautious.
